Blade: Trinity
Long before the Black Panther movie, there was the Blade Trilogy staring Wesley Snipes. A series based on the Marvel’s Blade character. A half breed Vampire, who can withstand sunlight, thus the nickname, “Day Walker.” Watch the first one, ignore the second, and then enjoy the 2004 trilogy wrap up. The third and final Blade film, and a good B-Movie to boot. Not only is Snipes a cold, hard, bad-ass in this movie (as he is in all the Blade films), the director made some interesting casting choices. Blade is assisted in this film by two other Vampire Hunters, played by Ryan Reynolds, and Jessica Biel. My take on Reynolds character is this could have been a post college Van Wilder who made some really bad life choices. Jessica Biel doesn’t talk much, but seriously, she doesn’t have to. Comninic Purcell is the chief bad guy, but supporting villains played by Parker Posey and John Michael Higgins just add moments of joy for anyone who has seen Best in Show or A Mighty Wind. Parker Posey even has a nice serious dramatic scene. There is even an actress best known for her work in the American Pie movies. I kept waiting for her to talk about double clicking her mouse. Fire up the popcorn and enjoy.

American Ultra
This is a story about an unassuming young stoner named Mike in West Virginia. He works in a convient store and is prone to anxiety attacks. He also has a surprisingly hot girl friend. Mildly interesting, but not very gripping. Then the focus shifts to CIA headquarters, were two agents are in a turf war. The topic appears to be the young stoner, and why is so important to one of the agents that he be killed? This is where it gets interesting and gives a big hat tip the the Borne Identity series. Mike is actually a sleeper agent. The lone survivor of a program to produce deadly agents from three time loser “volunteers.” The former head of the program shows up and activates Mike with a series of code words. Now things go from interesting to violent. Starting with the two CIA operatives (from a competing program that trained violent psychopaths) who were doing something (just guess) to his car. Mike takes them out as they approach. He had just made some instant noodles, so the hot water goes in the face of one as he stabs the other in the neck with his spoon. Things escalate from there, from a police station filled with dead cops to a massive over reaction by the CIA. A little slow to start, but this flick picked up nicely with combined humor and action. Some excellent work by supporting cast members as well. Well worth the rental and popcorn.

John Wick
A cautionary tale set in the action genre. The teachable moment here is if you steal a man’s car, kill his dog, and don’t kill him, make sure he isn’t the retired top hit man for your father’s Russian crime family. Keanu Reeves plays the protagonist, John Wick. Lots of serious gun fu is this movie with a surprisingly good cast. It includes Willem Dafoe and Adrianne Palicki as other professional assassins. Wick seeks revenge and gets bloody satisfaction. Worth the popcorn and rental. Joe Bob would say to check it out.

Kingsmen: The Secret Service
A fun modern spy movie. The Kingsmen are a NGO. Not the type that takes money from the middleclass in the first world to give to the rich in the third world, after skimming their take of course. Nope, these are self-funded upper class Brits. Proper Gentlemen and Ladies, and uber-spies. Think John Steed with a health dose of Jason Bourne. Like most spy movies, it is the villain who makes the movie. Samuel Jackson is excellent as the tech billionaire AGW cultist who has moved past the typical socialist wealth transfer scheme AGW types are so fond of, and moved straight to another favorite of environmental extremists, genocide on massive scale. Of course, making sure the “right people” survive the kill off. It’s up the Kingsmen, including their newest recruits, to save the World, which they do with style and well tailored suits. Well worth the rental and popcorn. My take is that Joe-Bob would approve.

The November Man
Former Bond Pierce Brosnan teams up with former Bond girl Olga Kurylenko in this tale of espionage, morality, and international conspiracies. The action is good, as is the acting. There is the occasional upper torso female nude scene, just so you can have some sex with your violence. Not all the portrayal of human sexuality is wholesome though, one of the main villains is not a nice person. In all, a good example of B-Movie making. Well worth the rental and popcorn.

On this Boxing Day, I’m going with a traditional Christmas move. It takes place during a Christmas office party, the hero came to LA to visit his wife for Christmas, there are Christmas decorations all over the place. It’s a staple of the holiday season!

Bullet to the Head
Sylvester Stallone may be in his mid sixties, but he can still pay a convincing bad ass. He plays a career criminal who has worked his way up to professional assassin. The story starts with his latest employer deciding to kill him and his partner rather than pay them. His partner was killed and that really pissed him off. He ends up teaming up with an out of town cop investigating his ex-partner murder. Ok, the cop knows that Stallone character killed him, but he wants the man who paid him. Excellent fight scenes and the acting was pretty decent as well. Christian Slater as the other name actor, and is does a good job playing a crooked lawyer. The other actor I recognized was the big barbarian guy from Star Gate: Atlantis. He was delightfully bad ass himself as a mercenary working for the chief evil bad guy. In all it was a fun action flick. Well worth the rental and popcorn.

The Last Stand
Arnold Schwarzenneger is back. He’s in his mid-sixties and makes no bones over being old. He even uses it as a punch line in the movie. The movie was actually pretty good. A bit silly on the plot line, but come on, it’s a Schwarzenneger action movie. Some good actors in as well. Forest Whitaker as the FBI agent who loses the bad guy in the first place. I couldn’t help but think not catching Van Damn in Bloodsport typecast him in this type of role. Also filling out the good actor round up was Luis Guzman as the senior Deputy and Harry Dean Stanton as the gruff old farmer. Oh ya, Johnny Knoxville was in the movie too, more as comic relief, which he as pretty good at. It was a fun flick, with elements of comedy, action and a wee bit of drama. Fire up the popcorn and enjoy.

Live Free or Die Hard
This is the fourth Die Hard film, or the saga of John McClane, a man who keeps ending up in the wrong place at the wrong time. This time, it’s fighting rouge Cyber White Hats gone extremely black. Plenty of action, lots of gun fu and even some movie kung fu supplied by Maggie Q. Justin Long plays the cyber-geek sidekick who really doesn’t want to be involved the whole thing. For B-Movie bonus points, Mary Elizabeth Winstead plays McClane’s daughter Lucy. She has been in another B-Movie pick, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World.

Dredd
It’s back to Mega-City One and the world of Judge Dredd. This time it’s with SciFi fan Karl Urban in the lead role instead of Stalone. Urban played this role much truer to form. As in the Comics, you never see Dredd’s face. He always wears the helmet. It’s gritty, dark, nasty, and a lot of fun to watch. The bad guys are bad, the good guys are damn harsh, but fair. In all, a fun ride for fans of gritty SciFi action films.
