"It is noteworthy that it was not the Nazis who disarmed the Germans. That was the well-intentioned policy of the Nazis' predecessors, beginning with the liberal democratic Weimar government, which sought to control violent elements of the extreme Right and Left. "When one colleague learned I was in the N.R.A., he asked why "we" think that everyone should own an "assault rifle." That discussion ended when I asked him to tell me what an "assault rifle" was. Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms should be a convenience store, not a government agency.
"For the past thirty years it has been illegal to own a handgun in DC, giving criminals and savages carte blanche. As the national crime rate has declined, DC's has gone up. "The Second Amendment is naturally divided into two parts: its prefatory clause and its operative clause. The former does not limit the latter grammatically, but rather announces a purpose. Nowhere else in the Constitution does a 'right' attributed to 'the people' refer to anything other than an individual right. 'Keep arms' was simply a common way of referring to possessing arms, for militiamen and everyone else... Putting all of these textual elements together, we find that they guarantee the individual right to possess and carry weapons in case of confrontation. This meaning is strongly confirmed by the historical background of the Second Amendment." -- The United States Supreme Court Majority Opinion in D.C. v. Heller
